he collegiate church of Saint Martin:
in the early centuries of our era, the city of Juliomagus spanned a great distance along the left bank of the River Maine. Where the collegiate church’s transept now stands, a wide street once ran from North to South between two built-up areas. On the east side, archaeological digs have uncovered remains of lodgings made out of earth and wood. On the west side, archaeologists found a gallery supported by large stone constructions. Further west, remains of other razed walls testify to a densely occupied area. During disturbances at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th century, residents sheltered behind a protective inner wall, reducing its surface area to 22 acres.
